Grounding & Earthing: What is it and how to do it

Each and every other electrical thing; from plants, to animals, to clouds, to computers & phones are grounded, through soil & walking barefoot to the plug sockets in our homes.

Grounding, sometimes known as Earthing, is the ancient art of walking barefoot, it's about connecting with the Earth in a way we just don’t really do anymore. Humans have been around for about 200,000 years, its only around 40,000 years ago that we started wearing shoes, even then, most of the work was done outside, on the earth, in nature and not in man-made machines, clothes, houses and offices.

Let’s start at the beginning here, every animal, plant or living thing, is an electrical being, everything has a net charge, either positive, negative or neutral. We’ve all had an electric shock pass between people or things sometimes, this is all part of our individual static charge. My understanding is that our static charge builds up, just like an electrical storm, which needs grounding back down again, just like a lightening bolt. If we are never really allowing ourselves to touch the earth, we are never getting rid of this static charge inside our bodies.

If we are never really allowing ourselves to touch the earth, we are never getting rid of this static charge inside our bodies.

Each day we spend time in our homes, around electrical items, with WIFI and other electrical networks all circulating around us unseen, we sit in houses with are full of ways for electricity to not be conducted, we don’t want electrical shocks after all! Rubber on our shoes, wooden floors, tiles, carpets, plastics – these are all materials which don’t conduct electricity, so similarly don’t allow any of our charge to flow into them and back into the ground, you’re clearing energy out and allow new energy to enter, returning your body back to neutral. Imagine the impact of all that static energy built up inside, a little like when an electrical device is running slow and needs resetting.

Each and every other electrical thing; from plants, to animals, to clouds, to computers & phones are grounded, through soil & walking barefoot to the plug sockets in our homes; which all have earthing wires, to allow the safe discharge static build up.

For me, it has an enormous impact on my mood and my ability to control my emotions, it fills me with natural energy, calms my mind and brings me inspiration.

What are the benefits?

While there isn’t too much scientific research on the subject, you only need to ask those who do it how much of a difference it can make. There are absolutely loads of reported benefits including:

  • Better sleep

  • Stress reduction

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Reduces pain

  • Helps the body shift to rest and digest mode

  • Neutralizes free radicals

  • Regulates hormones

  • Improves mood

  • Improves creative thinking

For me, it has an enormous impact on my mood and my ability to control my emotions, it fills me with natural energy, calms my mind and brings me inspiration.

How do you do it?

I like to get my toes wet in the morning dew

The simplest way is to get outside barefoot! You just need a small patch of natural earth; grass is the best option. Sit with bare soles on the grass, on a bench with your bare feet on the ground, roll around in the grass in the summer if you wish! You just need your body, especially the soles of your feet, connecting with the earth, not man-made surfaces like concrete or tarmac, real natural earth; grass, mud, sand, water.

You can also get the same effect with wild swimming, in seas and natural rivers, all beautifully connecting you back to nature, allowing it to heal your body in a way only ancient history understands.

You can also purchase grounding mats and bed sheets, I’m looking at trialling one soon, so I will update you on how I get on. They work by connecting to the earth port in your plug sockets.

For me, a few mornings a week I walk around the field with no shoes on, I like to get my toes wet in the morning dew and allow myself a little time without my phone in my hand.

I’d love to know if you practice grounding, if you’ve ever noticed a difference when barefoot or if you’re perhaps going to give it a try?
