How I am trying to remain calm while there is a pandemic happening

Panicked people don’t behave rationally… they stockpile toilet rolls and buy more pasta than they can eat. I could quite easily be one of these people, with the constant flow of Sky and BBC news notifications and not one conversation being able to pass by without the mention of coronavirus my panic levels are slowly rising.

I am a worrier, I am asthmatic, and I am an introvert, self-isolating sounds like my idea of heaven… however I am worried about not being able to breathe as I honestly know how that feels, and its awful! I am having to check in with myself daily and follow the below steps to keep myself calm.

 

Turning off the notifications

This might seem like a simple step, but I am on my phone a lot during the day, which means I am constantly overconsuming as the news breaks of another sad lost life or another cancelled event. While I do want to know all this information, being able to control the time and place I read and hear the stories gives me the control back over my emotions.

 

Reading between the lines

I am not a scientist, I am not an expert who can give their opinion, but newspapers, social media and all other sources of information are ultimately trying to get views and sell papers. Yes we need to be at a heightened level of awareness but we don’t need to panic, the governments advice, right now [13th March 2020], is to carry on with our lives while washing our hands more than we normally do and self-isolating is we have a cough or temperature.

 

Getting into nature

Whenever I start to feel the panic rising inside me, I get up from what I am doing, and I take myself as close to nature as I can at that moment. This could be in the wild field or it could be at the window looking at the garden, whatever I can do to take a moment away from consuming and just press pause.

 

Looking after myself

Now, more than ever, we need to be taking care of our health, trying to eat our fruit and vegetables, drinking plenty of water, taking the medication we should be taking. I am rubbish at taking my inhaler twice a day, but right now, I am prioritising my health.

 

Looking after others

While everyone out there is stockpiling pasta, we are forgetting to donate to foodbanks and those who are in need, we need to keep checking in on those vulnerable people around us, calling elderly relatives and neighbours, staying away from them if we feel unwell, taking spare food to the foodbanks.

 

Overall I am just keeping my mindset as positive as I can, not allowing myself to be so consumed by the panic that I cannot carry on and ensuring my consumption of information is controlled by me. I’d love to know how you feel about the situation?
